Essential oils are used as a basic raw material in many industrial sectors: phytomedicines, aromatherapy, perfumery, cosmetics, decoration, food, agriculture, etc. These odorous substances come from a variety of aromatic plants that could be cultivated in dry areas with low irrigation inputs. To dedicate professionally to this cultivation implies the handling of important extensions of land, acquisition of specific machinery and the installation of distillation plants.
Although the innovation is total and not without risk, prices and market demand is very interesting, with a very important aroma consuming industry in Catalonia. Therefore, the main objective is to disseminate the cultivation of MAP aimed at the production of essential oils, and we will do it with the intervention of MAP farmers and producers of essential oils, essential oil traders and a company that uses oils and produces natural cosmetics and health products leading the sector.
The meeting will be held at the Centro de Interpretación Histórica y Natural Molí del Foix de Santa Margarida i els Monjos (Barcelona), and is addressed to enterprising farmers or cooperatives who are interested or curious about the possibility of producing aromatic and medicinal plants (AMP) in their area in order to diversify their activity based mainly on traditional crops of olive, almond and, in some areas, grapevine.
It is also addressed to presenting the cultivation of A&MP to obtain essential oils as a real alternative in those areas of new irrigated lands with reduced irrigation provisions.
